Summary

Suggestions for Modem Troubleshooting.

  1. Use the computer's Phone Dialer (in Programs/Accessories/Communications/Phone Dialer) and call a phone within earshot (a cell phone, for example). This will confirm that the modem is connected to the phone line and is working properly.
  2. In the Windows control panel, access Modems or Phone and Modem Options. Locate the Diagnostics tab and run a Query Modem. If the modem does not respond it indicates that it is not properly configured in Windows or that it is in use by another program. When the modem is In Use by Another Program, open Task Manager and end task on any other programs that use the modem (examples: PCAnywhere, Fax Programs, RAS).
  3. In the Windows control panel, access Modems or Phone and Modem Options. Verify that the number of modem drivers installed matches the number of modems physically on the computer. Any extra, unused drivers, should be removed.
  4. With external modems, verify that all wires are connected.
  5. Set parity to Even, Stop bits 1 and turn off Error control, in Modems/Advanced in the control panel.
  6. Use the string WH1 for external US Robotics modems. WH1 is located at the bottom of the list (not in the W's) in the Modem Setup window in PCCharge.
  7. If the modem does not show up when Detect Modem Settings is clicked, the drivers are not properly installed.
